CAKE People Development Coaching Award winners announced at The Coaching Conversation 2018

By Shelley Measures, Dec 19 2018 10:20AM

On 29th November CAKE People Development revealed the winners of the CAKE Coaching Awards.

The awards, part of their East of England coaching and mentoring conference, The Coaching Conversation, held at Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket, bought together 100 HR and L&D professional from across the region.

This year's finalists came from a broad range of organisations and sectors giving CAKE the opportunity to recognise the best coaching practices in the region.

The winner of the CAKE Coaching Champion Award was Miro Vala, Worldwide Fruit Ltd, nominated by HR Director, Tricia McCarron. She said “Miro is our ‘go to’ person, he’s so passionate about helping others develop and has taken his role further than anyone else in the business. He’s continuing his own development in his quest to help others. He recently requested to work part-time, so he could develop his own coaching consultancy which we were delighted to accommodate.”

Judges comments:

Miro has shown vision, passion and energy for his coaching practice and has, for many years, devoted himself to promoting the importance of coaching at work long before it became a hot topic in business. The drive and focus Miro provides and the support he gives his organisation are clear, and the feedback clearly illustrates the impact of his work. We were very impressed by his support of the coaching culture within the organisation over and above his job role — a very worthy winner.

East Coaching Community Healthcare won the award for The Best Coaching Initiative in recognition of the work it has undertaken to introduce coaching techniques into consultations with patients and clients in order to improve their care and outcomes.

Dr Cushen – Brewster, Director of Quality and programme lead, said “We are thrilled to have been recognised for the advances we have been making in introducing health coaching into all our conversations with users of our services. It helps people to take ownership of their care programme and set realistic goals that they want to achieve and that we can help them reach. I’m very proud of our training team and everyone at ECCH who has embraced health coaching principles with such enthusiasm.”

Judges comments:

The judges were very impressed by this application of coaching. It clearly demonstrates the difference in outcomes when you empower people to manage their own health and wellbeing. The submission outlined the approach and results in a compelling way, and the interview added a richness and passion to the entry. A major element of our judging criteria is whether others can learn from the initiative and this entry certainly demonstrates the transferability of approach.

The Coaching Conversation, hosted by CAKE People Development Director, Margaret Burnside, has become a permanent fixture in the East Anglian business calendar and attracts delegates from a wide variety of sectors. Margaret said, “we have a passionate belief that developing people should be at the heart of every organisation with coaching as a vital ingredient.

Our aim is to support the region's organisations to drive performance and build capacity through the use of coaching. Through our work with clients and our partners, we are privileged to see inspiring, innovative local organisations that actively create stimulating working environments with a genuine commitment to learning and development. Our conferences act as means to bring HR and L&D professionals together for an opportunity to connect, learn, discuss ideas, share insights and hear from a range of experts in their field.”

Guest Speakers included Andy Lancaster – Head of Learning and Development CIPD, Linbert Spencer OBE – Director of Central Leadership and renowned author and Coach Julie Starr.
